Spring time calls for renewing our energy and our minds. It’s a time of year for new ideas and new creations. I'd like to share 3 herbs which I use regularly, and feel are great tonics for the spring season.
The herb Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) is on my list of spring tonics to build health, and rejuvenate the body and mind. Gotu Kola is known to enhance mental clarity, improve memory and increases awareness and intuition. What the ancient healers knew about this herb, modern science is now studying. Gotu Kola is a nervine herb, it activates the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein which encourages new brain cell formation. It has also been shown to increase nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein which stimulates the growth of new nerve cells. This is a wonderful herb to help clear “brain fog”, as Gotu Kola helps to raise oxygen levels in the brain, increasing metal alertness. It’s benefits for circulation are not limited to the brain, as it also increases blood flow through out the body. There are many studies which show that Gotu Kola increases blood flow to the legs and have helped with swelling of the legs as well.
I’ve spoken of Spirulina many times, and once again I place it on my list for rejuvenating foods to build health and longevity. Spirulina is all about restoring balance to the body. Energetically, spirulina sends the message to “stop pushing yourself, take time to nourish and rebuild your body.” It contains so many health building nutrients that it qualifies as a multiple vitamin and mineral. Spirulina helps the body maintain balanced blood sugar, increases energy production, improves memory, removes heavy metals and acts as a powerful antioxidant to protect the brain. Spirulina is a blue-green algae and has no cell wall to digest, making it easy to digest. A good choice when people are weak or run down. Its dark green color and high chlorophyll content rejuvenates the liver, making it a great tonic to take in the spring time.
Peppermint Tea – I like to blend peppermint tea with green and black teas. I enjoy it served hot or cold. Peppermint is a great booster for the mind and body, it is stress relieving, energy enhancing and mind clearing. I like to have a cup of peppermint tea when I start working in my office in the afternoon, it wakes me up and brightens my mind. Peppermint is good for enhancing digestion. For those with an irritable digestive tract, it is known to help prevent digestive spasms. Because peppermint relaxes muscles and reduces pain, it is often used to prevent a headaches or migraines from coming on. If you don’t like drinking the tea, you can use peppermint essential oil instead. Diffuse it in a room, or rub directly on your temples, neck or belly.
