Understanding the Roots of Disease

Looking beyond symptoms to understand the deeper causes of illness
Most people do not question where illness truly begins. When symptoms appear, we often assume they are simply part of getting older or the result of genetics. Rarely are we encouraged to look deeper — to ask what may have been unfolding within the body long before the first symptoms appeared.

True healing begins when we look beyond symptoms and explore
the deeper roots of imbalance.
Recently, I overheard two women discussing their health concerns. While I couldn’t catch every detail, two statements stood out clearly: “I must be getting old” and “I inherited this condition.”
It saddens me that so many people believe illness is an inevitable part of aging or simply a result of genetics. Yet I understand where this belief comes from.
After a typical 10–15 minute consultation with a doctor, many patients leave with little understanding of their condition. Can anyone truly evaluate your health in such a short time? In my opinion, this isn’t nearly enough to grasp the full picture of why someone is unwell.
Does your practitioner ask in-depth questions about your diet — like the multiple café lattes you drink each day to keep you going, or your skipped meals and salt cravings? Do they explore your lifestyle, sleep habits, or lack of regular exercise? When you leave the office, do you have a sense of where your health issues may have originated, or whether they could have been prevented? Most importantly, are you aware that your body is capable of healing itself?
Approaches to Healing
The medical approach to healing often differs greatly from natural healing. Conventional medicine tends to treat illness as a single cause tied to a set of symptoms. For example, sore joints are labeled arthritis, and medication is prescribed to manage pain and inflammation. If that fails, stronger medications or surgery may follow.
But this approach does not address the root cause — it often masks symptoms, which can eventually lead to new ones.
Natural healing encourages us to ask deeper questions and consider the many factors that may trigger symptoms. We look for imbalances within the body and environmental stresses that disrupt its ability to maintain health and balance. Our goal is to uncover the roots of disease.
What are the roots of disease, and how do we identify them?
Constitutional Strength
The first area to consider is your constitutional makeup — your inherent physical and emotional resilience. Those with strong constitutions often resist illness more easily, while those with weaker constitutions may struggle to handle stress. Certain weaknesses within body systems can run in families, such as a tendency toward heart disease or digestive problems.
If you have a weaker constitution, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet at least 80% of the time becomes especially important. Those with stronger constitutions may appear to “get away with” an unhealthy lifestyle for many years. Eventually, however, the body begins to show signs of strain, and declining health often comes as a surprise.
Once your strengths and weaknesses are identified, a more effective
health plan can be created.
Health History
Next, consider your long-term history. Many people focus only on when symptoms began, but it is equally important to look at what was happening six months or even a year before those symptoms appeared. The body is resilient, and the effects of stress or trauma often take time to surface.
Most illnesses develop after a period of prolonged stress, poor habits, or neglect of self-care. By reflecting on the months leading up to the onset of symptoms, you may begin to recognize patterns and identify where changes are needed to restore balance.
Environmental Influences
Another important factor is your environment. Is your home or workplace contributing to your health challenges? New homes, carpets, or renovations can introduce toxins, and many workplaces expose people to pollutants in the air. These environmental influences must be considered when tracing the roots of disease.
Choices within our environment can also become powerful contributors to healing. Simple changes, such as choosing natural cleaning products, using essential oils instead of artificial fragrances, or cleaning with microfiber cloths that require only water, can significantly reduce the chemical burden placed on the body. Becoming more mindful of the products we bring into our homes allows us to create living spaces that support health rather than quietly undermine it.
Emotional and Spiritual Well-Being
Your emotional outlook also affects the health of your body. Emotional stress can influence digestion, the nervous system, and even body weight. Taking time to regularly reflect on the emotions you are holding can be very helpful. When strong emotions arise, they often signal that something within us is out of balance. By acknowledging these feelings without judgment, we create space for greater clarity and understanding. From this place of awareness, we can begin to release emotional tension and respond in ways that support greater balance and well-being.
Your spiritual outlook matters as well — feeling connected to purpose and meaning in life often influences overall health. When we feel disconnected from our higher self, our Creator, or the greater flow of life, a sense of imbalance can arise that may lead to anxiety, restlessness, or fatigue. Taking time for quiet reflection, prayer, or meditation can help restore this connection and bring a deeper sense of peace and alignment.
Lifestyle and Nourishment
Physical health is equally important, and regular movement is essential for maintaining vitality. The body often communicates through symptoms, which can be seen as a language calling for attention. Are there areas of your body that need extra support or care? Taking time to evaluate these areas and incorporating gentle exercise, stretching, or supportive movement can help restore balance, strengthen the body, and prevent illness from developing.
And finally, there is the question of diet. Are you eating nourishing foods, drinking healthy beverages, and using supplements when needed to support your nutritional needs? Diet plays a foundational role in maintaining health. Highly processed foods and empty calories can place an unnecessary burden on the body and mind. Becoming more mindful of the foods and beverages we consume can be an important step in understanding — and addressing — the deeper roots of disease.
Restoring Balance
The root causes of disease do not have to remain mysterious or unknown. By asking thoughtful questions and paying attention to the answers, we can begin to uncover the sources of imbalance — and take meaningful steps toward restoring health.
Perhaps if the two women I overheard had been encouraged to explore these deeper questions, their conversation might have sounded very different. Instead of assuming their symptoms were simply the result of aging or genetics, they might have discovered that the body often carries a story — one that, when understood, can lead us back toward balance and healing.
