Listening Before the Light Arrives

Trusting the path that unfolds before us

There is a quiet moment just before dawn that has become one of my favorite times of day. The world is still wrapped in darkness. The first hint of morning has not yet touched the horizon, and yet the birds already know.

Before the light arrives, they begin to sing.

A rooster crowed somewhere in the distance. A mourning dove answered with its familiar, gentle call. Then another bird joined in, followed by another, until the trees were alive with song.

As I sat outside one morning with a cup of coffee, listening to their chorus unfold one voice at a time, I found myself wondering...

Why are the birds singing?

Long before the sun reaches the horizon, they are already participating in its arrival, welcoming a day they could not yet see.

The birds don’t wait for proof that the sun is coming. They sing because they trust the rhythm they have always known.

As I listened, I was reminded of a concept in sound healing called entrainment—the tendency for living systems and rhythms to gradually synchronize with one another. Whether it is pendulum clocks, heart rhythms, or even the cycles of nature, harmony has a quiet way of inviting everything around it into balance.

The dawn chorus draws me to connect with this gift.

Wanting to become part of that celebration, I carried my crystal harp outside and began to play. Each note seemed to awaken another response from the birds around me. In that simple moment, I no longer felt like an observer. I had become part of the morning song itself.

Often, health, peace, and vitality begin in much the same way. Not by forcing ourselves to feel different, but by gently aligning ourselves with the deeper rhythms that have always been present.

The birds did not create the morning, they simply responded to it.Maybe that is what inner listening asks of us as well. To trust the light before we can fully see it, and follow the path before before we know where it leads.

A Quiet Reflection: Where in my life am I being invited to trust before I can see the light?
