Herbs and Color Therapy
God has given us herbs for healing and has adorned these plants with flowers, fruits or berries whose colors help to guide us in how they might nourish the body. Color is an aspect of light and light is energy. Looking at herbal formulas from the standpoint of the color vibrations they carry is very interesting. These colors help to guide us on how they might be used to nourish the body.
The color red is stimulating or activating, capsicum holds this energy. Small amounts can be used to stimulate the body or a system into action. You will often see a small amount of capsicum added to the base of an herbal formula to act as a catalyst to help carry the other herbs to where they are going (see Nature's Sunshine's Sinus Support or Energ-V). Hawthorn berries are red to deep blue - they nourish the circulatory system. They are more activating then stimulating. These herbs can be used to activate a person’s passion or motivation. Garlic is white. The color white contains all the spectrums of the rainbow. Think of white as the color before it passes through a prism and divides into the rainbow. Therefore, white influences all systems of the body. It is strengthening and cleansing, and purifying, so, it tends to help fight infections, and release toxins or pain. White is also said to nourish the circulatory or nervous system. Nature’s Sunshine’s formula HSII combines these three herbs: hawthorn, capsicum and garlic together. This formula nourishes and cleanses the circulatory system while gently activating it.
Blue and purple are calming, they quiet both the mind and the heart. Blue and purple nourish and balance the nervous system. Lavender, wood betony, blue vervain, passionflower and skullcap are examples of herbs with blue or purple flowers. These herbs are all well known for helping to nourish and relax your nervous system and promote restful sleep. Chamomile and feverfew on the other hand, are white. As I mentioned above, white nourishes the nervous system but also has a property to release pain. Chamomile is wonderful for relaxation and helps to release tight painful muscles. While feverfew has a history of helping with tension headaches, migraines and painful arthritis. Both chamomile and feverfew have a small yellow circle of color in the middle of the flower. Yellow is a color which nourishes the stomach and the supports the Solar Plexus chakra. Both these herbs are well known for helping with digestive complaints.
Green brings balance into the body, it is a color of the abundance of nature and supplies many trace elements. Ultimate GreenZone, spirulina, kelp and alfalfa are favorites of mine. The green foods nourish the liver and help the body to balance its pH. When you are run down and have not been taking care of yourself, it is good to include green herbal formulas into your daily supplements. They are abundant in the 77 trace minerals need for a healthy body. These trace minerals activate over 2000 enzyme reactions in the body, helping to enhance vitality and build health. Nature's Sunshine's Herbal Trace Minerals contains the herbs alfalfa, kelp and dandelion.
Dandelion greens are full of trace minerals and their yellow flowers indicates the plants ability to activate digestion. Eating bitter dandelions greens on a salad help to stimulate the production of enzymes to help digest your food.
I hope this post has opened your eyes to yet another amazing aspect of plants and herbs.
Blessings, Valerie
