Help for Sore achy feet
During the summer months I receive a lot of e-mails from people about sore painful feet, plantar fasciitis and bone spurs. During the warm weather people tend to wear sandals or go barefoot, compared to wearing sneakers or work shoes which offer little support to the arch of the feet. The feet become injured and inflamed more easily.
The sandals are not the root cause of the injury, just a trigger. The root cause has to do with not stretching the calf muscles and feet regularly, poor fitting shoes, overuse of tendons, and loss of collagen due to aging and poor diet.
My 3 favorite supplements to help support healing and repair of tendons are Nature’s Sunshine’s IF-Relief, MSM and Collagen powder. Here a few details about these:
IF Relief - this is a great product to help the body to reduce inflammation and pain. Inflammation and oxidative stress are a result of overuse and injuries to muscles, ligaments and tendons. This results in the injury of the connective tissue resulting in such conditions as tendonitis. IF Relief combines several herbs such as turmeric root extract and mangosteen extract which have potent antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. As well as, andrographis paniculata, boswellia and white willow herbs which help the body to control pain and inflammation. This is a great formula for sore and aching muscles after exercise. In addition to helping reduce inflammation and pain in the tendon. (#1175)
MSM is a naturally occurring organic mineral. It can be found in every cell of the body, it is used in the formation and repair of connective tissue such as tendons. A deficiency of MSM will cause protein structures, such as tendons, to become weak. MSM promotes healthy flexible cells which is very important for healthy tendons. It has natural anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties and improves circulation to the injury site. (#4059)
Collagen is a great product for healing muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments. Collagen provides a form of hydrolyzed protein which means it is in predigested form and readily absorbed by the body. This protein provides amino acids which are the building blocks of the structural system. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and is essential to maintaining the health of the connective tissue such as ligaments, cartilage and tendons. Collagen also helps keep muscles flexible and toned when used in conjunction with exercise. It helps prevent sagging of muscles due to age and improves the skin strength, flexibility and smoothness. I recommend Neocell Super Collagen powder. It is the best quality collagen at the best price I have found. I take 1 scoop daily in my smoothies to keep my skin and tendons healthy. (available at health food stores)
Note: for tissue repair, collagen is most affective when combined with Vitamin C – take 1000 – 3000 mg. daily
Stretching the tendons is critical for healing and repair, as well as preventing injury. Here is a great video from Dr. Mandell to explain why injuries to the feet happen, and some stretches you can do to improve this condition.
